Basic characteristics:
This is the only native rat found in New England, unless the Roof Rat is brought in by chance from outside the area. They are also called Sewer Rats, River Rats, Barn Rats and City Rats. The largest of the common rats, Norway rats usually measure 7" to 9.5" in length, including the tail. They are predominantly brown in color, with splashes of black, gray, and yellowish-white in their coarse, shaggy coats. Norway rats are nocturnal, and they dwell in underground burrows. Severe infestations can be found above ground in drop ceilings, garages, out- buildings, crawl spaces and attics.
Time of year they are active:
Norway rats are native to and very common in New England, and are active and visible all year long.
The damage they can do:
Norway rats frequently gnaw through insulation, siding, food containers, wires-anything that gets between them and their food source. Many house fires of official "unknown origin" have been blamed on rats gnawing through electrical wiring in the attic.
You'll know you have Norway rats:
Besides the actual sighting of these dreaded creatures, the most common signs of their presence are: gnawed food containers (which results in food contamination); burrows around the outside of the building, about the size of a tennis ball; oval-shaped fecal droppings about the size of a pencil eraser; and noises in the walls or attic late at night.
Are they dangerous?
Besides the damage they can cause to your property, ALL rodents can carry disease. In fact, they have been the cause of some of the worst outbreaks of infectious diseases in human history!
Why are they in my home?
Norway rats will settle in and raise their young wherever they find a safe harbor and a consistent source of food and water. They love to be secluded-the more tucked away from the outer world, the better. If there is an outside garbage bin or an open dumpster on your property, rats may take the opportunity to feed there. Other food sources include bird seed from feeders or pet food placed outside. Good sanitation is an important preventive measure.
Our treatment-and our promise to you:
Our goal is to eliminate your rodent problem during our first visit. If you see more rodent activity after the treatment, we will re-treat, free of charge, throughout the warranty period.
Our Rodent Elimination Service starts with a complete inspection of your property to find the source of your problem. In most cases, we treat the infestation with a single-feed, second-generation anticoagulant product. In sensitive areas, or areas where children or pets might come into contact with the product, we place it in a tamper-resistant station designed to limit access. We also might use mechanical devices such as traps, glue boards, and liquid baits.
What happens after treatment?
After the first treatment, there is usually an immediate reduction in rodent activity. Total elimination might take as long as 2 weeks.
Year-after-year protection…
Now is a great time to protect your home for the entire season. For just a little extra, you can arrange for a Full Maintenance Program to protect your family against the threat of rodents, and many other pests that can invade your home!

Basic characteristics:
Roof Rats are not native to or likely to be found in New England. Roof rats are similar in appearance to Norway rats, but they are smaller and sleeker. This body design helps them climb along wires, vines, tree branches and rooftops. Roof rats prefer nutritious foods such as seeds, snails, fresh fruits, and vegetables. Accordingly, roof rats are usually found in distribution centers and warehouses. But, on occasion, they can also be found in residential homes.
Time of year they are active:
Roof rats are not common in New England, but where found, they are active all year long.
The damage they can do:
Like most rodents, roof rats will gnaw at anything that gets in their way. They especially like to gnaw on wood and have been known to bring down power lines that enter homes. Many house fires of official "unknown origin" have been blamed on rats gnawing through electrical wiring in the attic.
You'll know you have roof rats:

Small and slender, the house mouse has very large ears and a naked tail. Their color is dark on the body and light gray on the stomach. Basic characteristics:
The field mouse is also known as the white-footed mouse or the deer mouse. They are small mice, from 3" to 4.5" in length, not including the tail. The upper body is a pale to rich reddish brown, and the belly and feet are white. The tail is usually shorter than the head and body. Field mice prefer wooded or densely landscaped areas, and sometimes are found in open areas. They live in burrows under rocks or shrubs and will also burrow in the attic insulation inside the home. They can have 2 to 6 litters a year. These are the mice most commonly found in the home during the winter months. They can be found anywhere from the basement to the attic, and may have more than one nest.
Time of year they are active:

If you hear sounds like acorns being rolled across the attic floor at night, you probably have field mice living in your house.
Are they dangerous?
Besides the serious risk of a house fire, these mice are a carrier of the Hantavirus. The droppings and the nests should not be disturbed or touched with unprotected hands. In fact, homeowners should contact a professional for advice.
