German Cockroach
Basic characteristics:
German cockroaches are light brown in color with two black stripes on the top of the head. They are nocturnal in nature and once in your home they will seek food and water, as well as harborage in the cracks and crevices of the kitchen and/or bathroom during the day. Once an infestation is well established and the population begins to grow roaches can be found throughout the building.
Time of year they are active:
German cockroaches are active year round.
The damage they can do:
German roaches do no structural damage. Their fecal material can leave unsightly staining where they congregate. They are more of a health threat as they are known carriers of disease and are attributed to the cause of allergies and asthma.
You'll know you have German cockroaches:
When switching on the lights late at night in the kitchen, bath or other areas, you may see one or more of these insects quickly scurrying into cracks and crevices. Left untreated, their population will quickly grow to a noticeable infestation.
Are they dangerous?

Brown Banded Cockroach
Basic characteristics:
Brown banded cockroaches can be identified by the dark brown bands across the adult wings. Unlike the German roach the stripe on the brown banded runs horizontally not vertically. These roaches like warmer areas of the home. They will often be found in high places, such as above picture frames and wall moldings. The males can fly when disturbed.
Time of year they are active:
These roaches can be found year round.
The damage they can do:
Brown banded roaches cause no structural damage. The damage they do is more to our health; they are known carriers of disease and are attributed to allergies and asthma.
You'll know you have brown banded cockroaches:
These roaches are not a common problem in the Northeast. Although when discovered they might be in equipment such as computers, TVs, radios or any heat generating piece of equipment. They are usually found high in the room because of the heat. The males can fly when disturbed. These roaches attach their egg cases in an inconspicuous area, so you might find egg cases and not the adult roach.
Are they dangerous?

Wood Cockroach
Basic characteristics:
Both male and female wood cockroaches can fly. They nest outside, in bark or dead wood. They can be attracted to the house by outside porch lights. They are not an indoor pest although they have been known to find their way into the house from time to time.
Time of year they are active:
Wood cockroaches are seen during the spring and summer.
The damage they can do:
Wood cockroaches do no structural damage to your home.
You'll know you have wood cockroaches:
You will usually see the male wood roach near illuminated sources such as porch lighting, ground lighting, fireplaces etc. The male woods roach is a solid light brown color unlike the German or Brown banded it has no distinct markings. The male wood roach is larger than the female roach and they do not closely resemble one another.
Are they dangerous?
No, they are not a problem pest.
Why are they in my home?
Wood cockroaches come into your because they are attracted to light or they are brought in on a piece of firewood. They won't remain alive more than a week or so inside your home.

American Cockroach

American cockroaches are common in both commercial buildings and most urban type areas. This is one of the largest roaches (in size) found in the Northeast. The male American Cockroach can fly, but they're not very good at it. American cockroaches prefer food that is fermenting, but food is still food!
